The Location and Islands of the Bahamas

The Bahamas consists of 200 stunning and distinctive islands in the north-east of the Caribbean Sea. It is one of the best honeymoon spots, just ask the thousands of couples who choose if for their honeymoon trip each year. Bimini is just 50 miles east of Miami and is the closest Bahamian island to America. For this reason it is also known as the ‘gateway to the Bahamas’. Andros is the largest of the islands while the capital city of Nassau is at New Providence Island, neighbouring Paradise Island. The largest resort, Atlantis, can be found at Paradise Island, and this also has the most expensive accommodation – the Bridge Suite at $25,000 a night! The Bahamas is served by numerous airports, the main ones being Nassau, Freeport International and Grand Bahama International.

Although the weather is affected by the Gulf Stream and the islands have suffered a series of hurricanes in the past, the Bahamas has a well-deserved reputation for being laid back, welcoming and perennially sunny and is widely thought to be the ideal haven for honeymooners.

All Inclusive Honeymoon Deals

Holiday companies such as Virgin and Sandals offer numerous luxurious all inclusive honeymoon packages at a variety of Bahamian resorts, many of them strictly ‘adults only’ or ‘couples only’. Such packages provide the honeymooners with the ultimate in romance, comfort and seclusion, often including a hot tub, sumptuous kingsize bed strewn with rose petals and fresh flowers and a bottle of chilled wine on arrival.

Most suites have views of the ocean or of the opulent hotel grounds and gardens. Honeymoon packages start from around $100 per person per night, depending on the resort and the time of year (the region is warm and dry during the ‘peak’ season of November to April, and tends to be hot and wet from May to October, when the weather can fluctuate between stifling sticky heat and torrential downpours. Hurricane season is a little later, from June to November).

Depending on budget and requirements, the choice of facilities and services and standard of accommodation is as vast as your own imagination. All-inclusive means all food and most drinks are included in the pre-paid package price, plus often a number of other amenities and extras such as gym or spa access, pre-booked tours and entertainment events. In most cases, money can be saved by booking early. Many hotels offer discounts for future bookings, for example if a couple wish to return to celebrate their anniversary at the same resort.

What They Offer

Apart from the leviathan Atlantis resort, which has its own water park (Aquaventure) and casino, the Bahamas has a number of world-class luxury hotels for the discerning honeymooner, such as Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort and Spa, Pink Sands Hotel Harbour Island, British Colonial Hilton, Coral Sands and the Riu Paradise Island Hotel. Each one offers a range of fine dining experiences, from al fresco buffets to authentic silver service cuisine from Indian to Thai and from Italian to native wholesome Caribbean dishes.

All the top hotels have excellent sports facilities, including numerous sparkling blue pools (some with swim-up bars), tennis courts, gym and spa. Most offer water sports and guided activities and nearly all rooms have balconies or private patios with stunning views. The fine hotel resorts are all situated next to an expanse of tropical beach and have access to a choice of bars and nightclubs. Whichever resort you choose, the Bahamas offers a slice of paradise with its miles of sandy beaches and superb amenities for the traveler looking for rest and relaxation and for the honeymooner wanting the ultimate in Caribbean romance.

Activities for Honeymooners

Although many honeymooners might feel tempted to simply stay in their plush hotel suite for a few days, or dine at one of their palatial resort’s fine restaurants, or lie back on one of the pristine white beaches to soak up the golden Caribbean sun, there is absolutely no chance of boredom setting in during a Bahamian holiday.

The Bahamas is sometimes referred to as the ‘sailing capital of the world’, and there is certainly plenty to explore both on land and on (or in) water - hideaway coves, secret bays, secluded lagoons, waterfalls and private beaches. There are plenty of golf courses and other activities available (depending on the resort) include guided tours, bird-watching, scuba-diving, swimming with dolphins, sight-seeing and speed-boating. Some resorts also offer romantic sunset cruises. Alternatively, for the ultimate in relaxation, another option is to simply sling a hammock between two palm trees and order a cocktail, lie back with a book and listen to the waves lapping serenely at the shore.

Annual Bahamas Events

You might be fortunate enough to coincide your honeymoon stay with one of the islands’ annual events, for example the Junkanoo Festival in December/January and June or the Grand Bahama Carnival in September. This will mean you can really take in the full Bahamian experience and soak up the culture and vibe – the full authentic Caribbean experience!
